Local soccer fans will be packing the famous Seahorses balcony in a rare night game at Saunders Oval when they host local rival the Alston-villians this Friday night with reserves kicking off at 6pm and the premiers at 8pm. To add further interest the senior women’s teams will be playing at the same times on the S2 field.
The Seahorses bring some recent good form to the encounter after playing two consecutive games against Lismore Workers. Both games were hotly contested with Ballina scoring five goals and conceding seven, with a loss followed by a draw last Saturday. Matt Jeffery and Dave Betteridge were amongst the goals last weekend and the Seahorses committed themselves to a tight game of controlled play and aggressive attacking moves which cut the Lismore defence to shreds on numerous occasions.
The Alstonville game will be another gruelling affair with the Seahorses having the wood on them after several tight tussles this season. Coach Chris Layland will be wary of Alstonville’s capacity to launch counter attacks and he will no doubt be weighing up the conservative approach versus the full on attack mode which has surprised some of the leading teams in the second round. With Justin Stockham returning he has plenty of options at his disposal. More importantly the reserves have started to play together; yes, even their strongest critics have noted a turn-around in their style of play with more emphasis on team work as opposed to individual flair.
So the scene is set for a large crowd to come along and enjoy local football and delight to the numerous choristers who regularly adorn the Saunders Oval balcony. Full canteen facility and bar available – see you there! Come along and support local football!
